Prison Island and Nakupenda Beach: A Tropical Escape Awaits

Prison Island and Nakupenda Beach – explore Changuu also known as Prison Island which was intended to be a prison hosting criminals. Finish  the trip at Nakupenda Sandbank beach.

Actually, the Island is only 1 km in length and around 230 meters wide. Earlier, it had been owned by an Arab slave trader who wanted the Island to prevent slaves from escaping. Later, there was a prion built in 1803 which was initially destined to be a house for criminals from the mainland. Next, the Island became a yellow fever quarantine station. You will be astonished to hear the fascinating history of the Island.

Visitors can see the authentic prison building. It still stands on the Island and is used as a guest house. The guide will explain this interesting history in detail. Although it never became a prison hosting criminals, it’s started to be home for giant tortoises which were brought there from Seychelles in 1820. They were a gift from the Seychelles government. The prison has become a shelter for the animals. They became new dwellers of the prison cells.

This sanctuary contains creatures which are over 150 years old. You will get a chance to touch them and take a photo. The tortoises are very friendly, they come up close to socialize. On the Island you will also get to see stunning peacocks and have the opportunity to snorkel and admire beautiful marine life. It’s a perfect place for topping up your tan and relaxing over the coast.

Prison Island and Nakupenda Beach: A Disappearing Sandbank

Nakupenda Beach is the definition of a tropical dream, a pristine sandbank that emerges from the brilliant turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Stone Town. Aptly named after the Swahili word for “I love you,” this shimmering stretch of white sand offers an intimate connection with nature, where the only sounds are the gentle lapping of waves and the calls of seabirds. Visitors are treated to an expansive horizon of blue, making it an idyllic spot for sunbathing, swimming in crystal-clear shallows, and enjoying a traditional Swahili seafood barbecue under the sun. Because the sandbank shifts with the tides, every visit feels like a unique, fleeting moment in paradise, surrounded by some of the most vibrant coral reefs in Zanzibar.

Why Choose the Prison Island and Nakupenda Beach Tour?

Combining two of Zanzibar’s most iconic locations into a single day, this tour offers a perfect balance of cultural heritage and unspoiled nature. Whether you are looking for a deep dive into local history or a relaxing escape on a remote sandbank, here is why this experience is a must:

  • A Living History Lesson: At Prison Island (Changuu Island), you get the rare opportunity to interact with giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old. Exploring the 19th-century quarantine station ruins provides a fascinating glimpse into the archipelago’s complex past.

  • The Ultimate Beach Experience: Nakupenda (which means “I love you” in Swahili) is a spectacular disappearing sandbank. Because it is only accessible during low tide, the beach remains pristine, offering wide stretches of white sand and 360-degree views of the turquoise Indian Ocean.
